A member of the first men’s volleyball team at Sage, Kyle Ray will become the program’s first four-year letterwinner with his efforts this year. He has served the team as a three-year team captain. Ray was named the Gator of the Year as the team MVP in 2010. He was named to the Skyline Conference All-Star Second Team that season after tallying 282 kills with 26 aces and 279 digs.

As a sophomore, Ray was once again played on the league’s All-Star Second Team and by year’s end, he was saluted as the 2010-2011 Sage Male Athlete of the Year. He was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Bard College Tournament and finished the season with 20 aces to go with his 89 digs, 29 kills and 28 total blocks as a setter. He added 692 setting assists on the season with his play in 2011. Named to the Skyline Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, he was also placed on the NECVA Scholar-Athlete Team for his efforts in the classroom.

On the 2012 season, Ray was rewarded for his strong performances with a selection as the tournament MVP at the Bard College Invitational after leading the Gators to the team championship. He had 26 aces with 135 digs and 41 total blocks in 2012 and finished the campaign ranked 13th in Division III with his 9.32 setting assists per set average. He had a team-best 895 setting assists on the season and played in all 96 sets as a junior.

He holds Sage’s single-season records for most setting assists (895, 2012), service attempts (376, 2012), games played (96, 2012), and matches played (27, 2012). He also holds career records for most setting assists (1,606), most aces (72), digs (503), most games played (264) and matches played (78), while his 312 career kills is No. 3 and his 82 career total blocks is No. 3.

An accomplished scholastic player, Ray made an impact in the scholastic world with his performances in volleyball as a member of the Horseheads High School Girls’ Team in 2007-2008, where he excelled. Named the recipient of the Varsity H Coaches’ Award, he helped the team to the STAC Conference Runner-up title as well as a Class AA Section 4 Championship. That team also captured the Class AA Regional Championship and a Class AA State Semifinals finish. After the start of boys’ volleyball the following year, he was named the team’s MVP and earned a spot in the Plainview All-Tournament Team. That same team finished as the Section 4 Runners-up. He was an excellent student at Horseheads, with four selections to the honor roll and named the recipient of the Triple C Award.

At Sage, Ray has earned three straight selections to the All-Academic Team, while earning a spot on the newly created Sage Scholar-Athlete Team this January. He is a Dean’s List student, majoring in computer science. He spent this past fall studying abroad in New Zealand as a student at the University of Canterbury. He is joined on the Sage campus by his younger sisters, Kera and Kelsey, that played this past fall as members of Sage’s women’s volleyball team. He is the son of Jeffrey Scott Ray and Renee Ray.
